4 high starts to grind
First i did a search and did not find anything quite like my situation. The problem is that I bought this XJ lifted (5 spd 32S 6" lift and various other details)and it did not have a front driveshaft on it. I bought that and installed it and it seemed to work fine just nosier now. Now when I do engage 4 high it works fine at first. I can shift fine and then all the sudden it just starts to grind. I do to know if its because of high speeds or because after 30-45 seconds it just can't stay engaged. Any idea would be great. I am hoping this is not a transmission problem and maybe need another driveshaft again.

Sounds like the replacement shaft has a bad cv joint in it? I wanna say if the joint was bad, you'd have a grinding noise when just in 2wd as the front shaft spins when in drive.. Idk... It never grinds when just in 2wd right?

Yes. Do not run 4 high if your on dry ground, you will tear up your transfer case. They are not designed to be run on dry ground like that. Do you know if you have the 231 or the 242?

231. I had no idea you could never use them on dry ground. I just don't want snow to come and have a messed up 4wd.

This similar thing happens to me and my friend with our jeeps. We just put it in 2wd and rip it back into 4wd and it doesnt do it anymore.

Shift from 2h to 4h and back while at speed in a straight line. Let off gas, shift, tap gas, let off.

The 231 only has a part time 4wd system, which means you can use it only part of the time, and that is when you are offroad. The 242 that I have has both full time and part time 4wd. While its not good for the case and continued use of part time 4wd on pavement will chew up your case, as long as you've stopped doing that you should be alright. Go find somewhere offroad, and put it in 4wd to make sure things are fine. In truth really the 231 isn't as good for the snow as the 242. What makes the two different is that in 4wd in the 231 the front and rear axles are powered at the same speed. If your on the pavement often times the two axles will be at different speeds, that's what destroys the tcase. The 242 on the otherhand has a full time mode, where the front and rear axles are allowed to spin at different speeds due to a special differential inside the 242.
