One thing that will aggravate the situation is different size tires from front to rear or unmaintained tire pressures.
Just for completeness the reason this matters is difference in wheel rotation rates will cause components to bind internally. A big no-no is driving on dry pavement in 4H (part time). Pretty much guarantees this will occur. I believe my 1999's manual says that if you do run on pavement for a while and binding occurs, then pull off to a gravel shoulder and toss it into reverse for a bit.

In normal driving with 4H in the winter I've never had any problems engaging or disengaging. Slush and snow must be deep enough to allow for slip

I don't know I got a 231 and my friend has a 242 so I know both but its weird they said the 91 and newer and I have a 92 with vacum disconnect

242 never came with a vacuum disconnect front axle aka CAD. Only the 231 did and only through part of 1991.

Sure it's not just the vent hose coming off the diff?
