hey guys, I pulled a factory trailer hitch from a junk yard and installed it on my jeep. for some reason, only the four holes closest to the hitch end lined up okay with my jeep (two on each side). will 4 bolts be strong enough? I don't really plan to tow anything, just want to use it as a recovery point.

how far off or out off alignment are the other holes on the hitch in relation to the holes on the jeep

 

With 4 bolts its only good for decoration, NON useable for any thing. Stock hitch should have 10 bolts, 8 would work the 2 on the body could be leftout but the fraim rail are not strong enough for 2 bolt per side. Are you sure it stock and from an XJ?

 

sure as sure. I pulled it off an xj. there are only 8 bolts. the nut strips line up with the holes on my jeep, and they lined up with the holes on the hitch, but for some reason when I put all three together they don't line up. the last two holes on each side are offset by about 1/4 inch.

 

did you get it from a jy and if so was the xj wrecked that you got it off of if it was wrecked the hitch could be slightly twisted and not letting the holes line up

 

My rear hitch drawtite has only 4 bolts per side thats all they is and they aint no more.

 

the front end was bashed up...i guess that could've tweaked the unibody a little. plus my jeep got in an accident before I owned it (salvaged title). I didn't think about it, thats probably the problem.

my '99 with a mopar hitch had only 6 bolts....

 

my hidden hitch only went on with 6 bolts also, if i remember right.

it works though, towed the wife's heavy *** liberty across town at 55mph with no problems

 

My 93 XJ stock hitch only has 8

 

01' XJ factory hitch only had 8 but one snapped in the nut strip when i installed the gas tank skid. Ive towed quite a bit with just 7 bolts and no problems.

 

I just put on on my 99 last week and it only had 6 total anchor points... Ive towed my 12x6 trailer a good bit sence then with no problems. But I need to check this weekend to see if any need to bee tightened up or if any thing has happened under there.
