Default 4.7 V8

Anybody rebuilt a 4.7 engine? Whats the same/different from rebuilding a 318?
I read elsewhere that their a viable replacement for the 4.0 six, and get 20-23 mpg on the road....

Chrysler 4.7L V8 in an XJ?

Try Grand Cherokee tech and they'll tell you they suck. Then try Modified Tech about the swap.

Probably would get more fuel economy but a GM would be more reliable.

Novak Adapters like the man said.

Somebody posted on here a couple of days ago complaining about a 4.7 overheating under load.

They were in the wrong section because they had a Grand.

I told them they probably had a blown head gasket between cylinders on one of their banks.

I bought my daughter a '97 Grand back in January for her DD. I sure am glad it has the 4.0 in it.

The Grand Cherokee guys tell me I definitely have the better engine.

I wasn't thinking of doing an engine swap, though it seems a reasonable choice if you're so inclined.

I've seen on other forums that opinion of this engine is quite binary, folks either love or hate it. There are some new ideas incorporated in this engine, I'd guess MB influence in the design, and it seems either a bit fragile, or indestructible, depending on maintenance, near as I can tell, which is why I asked the question about any hands-on experience with this engine.

That's fine, it's still has nothing to do with this section and nobody will be able to give you a good answer lol

That is pretty much the answer. I would say they are fragile but can hold up relitively well if properly maintained and never overheated (I would never call an engine that sensitive to maintinance and overheats "indistructable").

They have a pretty long "laundry list" of common issues (many of which lead to expensive repairs or catestropic engine failure), however many of these issues are caused by or aggrivated by failure to perform proper maintance. In general the 4.7L V8 and 3.7L V6 (same engine minus 2-cyls) engines are very "sensitive", failure to follow maintance or a "severe event" (like a major overheat) can distroy one pretty quickly (with thin block-walls and heads prone to cracking they are especially susceptible to major damage from an overheat).

For these reasons I'd be very hesitent to buy a used vehicle with a 4.7L V8 or 3.7L V6 (except maybe a newer/lower mileage model that hasn't hit major maintance intrevals yet) unless it has complete service reccords.

Ya know, you're right, this is the wrong forum for this question, should be on Mod. Tech.

I just wasn't thinking at the time.

No matter, I think I have an answer anyway...
