4.5" vs 6.5"???
Wantin to lift the XJ. Wanting a long arm setup but can't decide on the lift height I want or would be best for me. Gonna run at least 33"s on it. Gonna be road driven quite often but will also be in the trails and on the rocks as much as possible. I've been plannin on RC's 6.5 long arm set-up for a while just so it would be capable on the trail but after doin some readin alot of people don't do 6+" if it's on the road quite often. Anybody mind puttin in their 2 cents?

the taller you go, the higher the center of gravity, the more top heavy. 6.5" is pretty tall. And fitting 33's is all about how much fender you want to trim, lol.

While I dont own a Jeep lifted quite that much, but I have heard from many people that do that if you trim your fenders back pretty good 4.5 is more than enough for 33's and still having more than enough room for some flex. All you would get by going the extra 2 inches to 6.5 is you are more rollover prone.

a lot of people run 4.5" Rubicon Express and fit 35's w/ minimal rubbing.(so i'm told)
I was told by the guy I bought my xj from that it has a 3.5" OME w/ 32x11.5's and it for sure rubs in the rear(pretty sure only because of width) Haven't gotten the chance to disconnect front sway bar and see what happens in the front but it does rub a little when I turn the wheel all the way.

Let me clarify real quick. It won't be my DD i have a Silverado for that, but it will be driven everywhere it goes, not trailered. Sometimes this will be a couple hundred miles. Want it to be as capable as possible on the rocks and trails though and might put 35's on it at some point.

I actually started a thread on this same topic on NAXJA. heres the link,

mine is my DD and after my research I've come to the conclusion that 4.5in is the right hight for me. Even though its my DD its still gonna be my weekend wheeler. 6.5in just raises the COG to much for me, ive already rolled one jeep. I was told to stay at 4.5 or even go up to 5.5 and skid the bottom of the jeep and I'll be good to go.

I'm just worried about it not being as good of a trail rig/rock crawler as i want if i go with the 4.5". Does anyone have pics of the 4.5" articulation?

I have been trying to figure out the same thing for the past 2 months. Except mine will be my DD. I posted a few threads as well and quite a few people said get the 6.5". Although some day down the road when the Cherokee isn't my DD I was thinking of maybe going to 35s. Now I see this thread with most people recommending going with 4.5" ahhhhhhhh its a never ending decision

lol

lol
articulation isnt decided by lift height
here is 4" and 35's, no rubbing whatsoever. the front would flex even more if i didn't limit it.

I was running an RE 4.5 for several years and very happy with it even though yields a fair amount of bump steer. Test mock-ups with 35's indicated a fair amount of trimming (especially rear) etc would work.
Moving to a 60 up front caused both pumkin and drive shaft clearance issues. I could have pushed the axle forward, but that would cause other issues. So I moved up to 6'5 to 7" long arms.
Personally, I'd prefer to be in the 4'5" range with long arms.
Hope this helps,
Kent

re bastard pack in the rear with a 1.5" shackle
homebuilt wristed radius arm longarms
tnt trackbar
10" travel edelbrock ias shocks in front
8" travel in rear with custom shock mounts
I'm glad I did this post cause I was under the assumption that the taller the lift the more articulation you can get out of it. So i'm definately leanin more towards the 4.5" now.
