if you go with the 4.88s youll pick up some low end torque. plus you could go with bigger tires.

Will the 4.88's fit in the stock carrier w/o modifications or do you have to replace it for one with a lower factory gear? Im planning on 4.56 or 4.88 myself.

Depends on your axle. I plan on going with 4:56s for 33's because the Dana 30 can have alot of strength issues with 4.88s.

You greatly increase the chance of grenading the diff if your running 4.88's on a dana 30 with 33s and up.

wouldn't 4.88's be overkill if its a daily driver? I was thinking of doing 4.56's but now I'm not so sure

Your transmission is an AX15. That trans is geared lower, that's why the manuals came with 3.07 gears, and the automatics came with 3.55 gears. so anywhere you would use a 4.56 on an automatic, you would use a 4.10 on a manual. get what I'm saying? so 4.56 on a manual will be like 4.88 on an automatic.

I kind of agree. I have an AX-15 with 33s and 4.56s and wish I had a little less gear on the highway. I actually think something like a 4.30 would be perfect for me. When I had 31s I had 3.73s and thought something a little deeper would have been perfect, like a 3.91. Back in my old Mopar muscle days 3.91s and 4.30s were common. It seems like the axles in Jeeps tend to skip those "in between" gears. I don't know if maybe they are available but just not common.

In short, if I had it to do again I would have tried to find 4.30s, or failing that probably gone 4.10s instead of the 4.56s I have. I tend to like to go faster than I should on the highway so that's probably a big influence. I go noticably slower in my XJ on the highway that my other vehicles because I don't like the RPMs. Although it is nice to never have to downshift on the highway, even on some pretty big hills.
