Note: since the 2000 is coil-on-plug if you use a 99 or older motor you will either fab up some coil-pack mounts or replace the coil-packs with a Dodge Viper coil: https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f67/co...7/#post2758385

You can also "piece together" a motor from one of the blocks Salad mentioned and a 02-04 WJ or 02-06 TJ "TUPPY" head, or a new head. I would be very hesitant to use another complete 00-01 engine with a 0331 head on it, if you are going through the effort of replacing the engine it makes sense to eliminate that potential point of failure in the process.

Before you rip into the engine what brand of oil filter do you have on it? When I first bought my current XJ it had a knock when cold. It had a fram oil filter. I changed the oil and put a Mopar filter and the knock went away. The cheap oil filter have weak anti-drain back flow valve in them and cause dry starts.

Yes if you want.

Bump... what oil filter is on there and have you checked the flex plate bolts? Replacing an engine due to a little rattle and oil leaks is a little premature.

To me it sounds like that he already has his mind set to change out his engine, Even if he doesn't need to.

So in early 90's block will line up fine with a 2002 and newer had? And all I would do is switch over all my assessories from my 2000 motor?

The 0331 is cracked. I just don't want to get a new head and put it on a bad block
