4.0 Engine removal.
I just recently sold a motor in one of my parts Jeep. I have never pulled a motor. Do you guys have any Advice,Tips or, tricks? It honestly seems pretty straight forward.
Thanks, Nick

Guess you know about the ground wires near the dipstick. I've seen a number of posts where guys somehow wrecked their CPS. You might "save" it. You probably want to support the tranny...

I've done it both ways and for me it goes by much faster and without as much cussing if I just pull the entire engine/tranny/tcase out at once. Granted I have a 1 ton host on a 8x8 roof beam- no cherry picker and have space to push the jeep out of the way. It is pretty straight forward either way you do it.

Where are the bell housing bolts? I am going to start removing it after work. I have a backhoe that is going to help me pull the motor. Where should I start? I am kind of nervous about removing the motor. I have never had to do a job this big.

If you don't drain the transfer case first it'll leak out the rear when you pull it. It's not necessary but you can pull the rear drive line first. It just slips off ether way. You might drain all three to avoid more mess. I think all the tranny wiring is there at the plugs rear of the dipstick. You are gonna pull the trans cross-member I think. Their are vent tubes, both tranny and Transfer case. No big deal unless you break off the deal there they attach, then there is an issue re threading yada yada. (or are they pressed in? ...
Back-Hoe can be a little choppy. Idk. anything might happen. You may, or may not pull the alt and power steering pump. If they are coming off anyway that will cut down on the chance of munching anything. The whole works is pretty long, about 6 feet.

I saved these for last yanking out a bad 98 motor, I sheared off the outer teeth on the last bolt on the passenger side which is a ridiculous ***** to get to and now I can't get the motor out unless I pull the tranny. It was easier to get to by removing the auto shifter from the floor and coming at it from the top, but not much.

I've relatively recently learned the power of the dremmel cutting wheel. One, 1-1/2 inch disk will do a 3/8 bolt. (and more) A couple of years ago I bought 50 on Ebay for about $20 IIRC. Yes, slow, but hey...If you can make a precision cut in the right place, it can be well worth the time.
Because you have the backhoe, I would drop the whole drivetrain on the ground then lift the jeep over it. Best, or only way to get the top two bell housing bolts is to undo the engine mounts, then lower the engine a few inches to make it easier. But you don't need to remove those bolt if your pulling the whole thing
