Default 4.0 alternator removal

I've got an 89 jeep with a 4.0. Question is. Any one have any easy removal and instal tips for the alternator. I've looked plenty of times and besides trying to make it come from the bottom. Best I can see is removin the battery tray and bringing it through the top. Any suggestions.

Before you replace it you should check out my upgrade set up that I did. I was told us renix guys can not do the Grand Cherokee upgrade that gets us 136 amps. Our stock is 90amps. I found a way to make it work. Nothing that anyone couldnt figure out but I hav not seen it done yet other than mine. Only change I am making is going with an adjustable Regulator. part # C8313

Well I got a 110a. I work for car quest so this has the the HD of two other options. Fairly cheap too.

I had to VERY carefully jack up the engine some via the oil pan with a large thick board so I did punch a hole in the pan with the bottle jack. Got that idea from CF!!

Would jack stands in the usual places not work to remove an alternator?

If you lift the engine a few inches you get more room to weasel the alternator out between the motor and "frame" rails. I did that same trick ion my '92. Board under the oilpan and lift slightly. Alternator was able to be removed after a bit of juggling.

I did this recently on my 89. Just drop it out of the bottom and then put it back up through the bottom. I didn't even jack up the engine or anything and I'm a big guy, though I'm on stock lift but on 235 tires. Just kind of take your time with it and bring it down slowly. For me it came out easily and then I went to put the new one in and I started to get mad and had problems getting the new altenator where it needed to go. You kind of have to turn and kind of snake the altenator, if you know what I mean, into the spot it needs to be.

Also, I got my altenator from Advance Auto and I had to grind it a bit to get it to fit.
