Talking 4.0 4 cyl still running

So i bought this jeep just due to the fact that it had the drivetrain i wanted, thought it was low rust but as ive posted in other threads it isnt... Anyhow it is the ultra rare 4cyl 4.0.. has two holes in the block and is missing two pistons and rods.. But amazingly still runs well enough to move around the yard and go up onto and off of a trailer..

Anyone else ever had this.. Cyl 4 and 5 are both out.. Hole in block and other than the enormous amount of oil that gets slung out of the block it runs fine..

Thanks

Seen it before on VW's. Blew holes in 2 pistons once in a Baja bug, out in the Mojave desert. We swapped the plug wire around and did the 15 miles to camp on 2 cyls. So with hole in your block it may well run, at least until all the oil leaks out.

Yeah. When i bought the heep the guy came out holding two half broken rods with chunks of piston attached.. He let me have them with it..
Last time i started it the oil pressure really began to fluctuate and then i think it may have started to loose another bearing.. I cant imagine that..
Oh well i am getting ready to pull the thing apart in ways its never seen.. New floors and probably an LS1 will be going in.. I just need to finish it before the snow hits..
That is its main purpose.. To keep me from driving my lowered full size truck in the snow..

I will take pics as soon as i get the intake off.. The rods exited on the manifold side.. Last time it ran it threw enough oil out on the hot manifold that it caught fire..

It may be a while.. Im working on a few other projects right now trying to tie up loose ends until i get the room for the jeep.

Wait, assuming you work for cummins (your email), your not putting one of those badboys in your XJ?

Been seriously concidering it. We make a new common rail 3.8 l and 2.8 litre Cummins that is the same technology as the newer 5.9 and 6.7l cummins diesels.. So it doesnt rattle and vibrate nearly as bad as the old 4BT did.. doesnt smoke nearly as bad, and has way more power than the old 4bt.. Weight would be my enemy on that swap though.. Between that and a winch bumper i would need Grand Cherokee lift springs and pucks too to keep the thing up in the air..

Lets just say that i have more than one engine combination in mind if i cant find a 4.0 to get me by..

Damn...

Rule 32! A video if you can - that's something I'd watch!

I know AMC engines in general are tough, but that's going some...

If youre running it with 2 pistons pulled out, I would at least disconnect the injectors for those holes...

No, im actually debating on the engine right now.. I have a 5.7 LS1 laying in the garage that was free.... I am really wanting to make that thing fit.. But i am not so sure that the 5 speed will go to the LS1 even with the Novak adapter.. I understand that there are slight differences in the mounting depth of the crank pilot on the LS family of engines when compared to the older SBC... I have a hydraulic bellhousing and an SM465 and NP205 that i thought would work well in there, but would loose the driveability of it without the OD..

Im ranting.. I will cover this in another thread..
