You probably would have beat mine too, but might have been surprised to see I was so close.

Simple reality... Mopar will cost so so so much more... you could go small block Chevy.. and pay for custom dana 44's for what it would cost to make a 318 what a 350 chevy cost.... if you talking HP.. but you can fit anything in anything with a hammer and welder....But i would go 360 before 318...old 340 even better

I only ask because I have seen the 727 stand up to some serious abuse.

An example would be Bill "Maverick" Golden's Little Red Wagon.
I dont race anymore i like to cruze go to car shows all over. but i still like to kick some green horns buts here and there. So the 440 with my 3.92 and a 727 i was running about 3800 rpms @ 50-55 mph. holding that rpm at 3-4 hours for a ride to the carlisle Pa shows my motor wont last too long. With the 700R4 i had built with a reverse manual valve body it is still loads of fun. i have a great 1st gear to launch and go when i want but up in 4th gear i run about 2600 rpm at 65mph and when i flip the switch and lock the converter it will give me another 200-300 rpm and i cruze about 2400 rpm at 65-70 so now i can just cruze the open highway.
and yes my 727 is a real strong tranny and still have it with a reverse manual valve body, heavy duty clutch packs racs ready, i'll never get rid of it just incase i want to go back.

I know what you mean, I drove my 72 Demon from Philly to Maple Grove with 4:10 gears. It was screaming the whole way. It's A-833 manual had a 1:1 final ratio too. It was wound out to say the least.

Chrysler 273, 318, 340, 360......same block, just different bore and stroke. Why would u want a 318 when it's so easy to bump the cubes????

dont forget about the 318 poly wedge built about 67 the worst 318 ever built. it would fall on it's face at 2500 rpm. had one in a 1967 baracuda notch back. 2 weeks later my buds and i droped in a 440. now that should have been called a wedge we has to shoehorn that thing in.

if you really want maximum power value and durability in a tight package go with an LS series engine from any newer gm truck/car they are quickly picking up where the sbc left off

My good friend and wheeling buddy put a amc-360 with headers intake an carb infront of a AX15 and D300 into his CJ5 beater which weights around 3300lbs. I thought it was alittle too much motor for it but there was times when he needed that motor, like losing 4x4 and having to use wheel spin to get out of mud.

Big problem with something like this is running a carb on an offroader. It would flood or stall from being starved while we did trails. So when your looking at a V8 swap also look into some sort of EFI setup, you'll be thankful when you have to decent a hill and your motor doesnt flood.
