no xj cherokee except the older full size FSJ came with the v8.

This isn't a Cherokee, but iirc, it may be a true elephant motor hemi.

I'd drive it.

A 318 is kinda a turd. 220hp which is 30hp increase for all that trouble, granted i know you add stuff to it to squeeze out some more hp. At that point why not just buy a grand

actually my mechanic put a v 8 his jeep just because he could.
he said all he had to do was the motor mounts and there's plenty of room still in there, so now he wants to put in a bigger v 8 in there

I believe he has a 302 in there now and is talking about putting a 351 in there.
he's not a real jeep guy, more of a hot rodder, as he wants to chop it 2 and drop it 2 as well

But, to answer your question, it is that easy for a bigger engine.

I am sure there is a lot more to it than just dropping it in. Novak makes some conversion kits for mounts but nothing for a 318 to Cherokee. I've put a 350 into an S10 before and there are a lot of things to take into consideration: your steering, exhaust, whether of not you are going to clear the front axle, a radiator that will keep the V8 cool and in some cases the extra weight on the front end(this would probably not be one of them).

Default 318? on an XJ?

well i have a dakota with the 318,and let me tell you it's fast enough, and when i got the truck i did some research on the 318's and the 360's,and what i came out with is that the 360 is bout 40 more HP than the 318 but one thing i did noticed is that the life expectancie of a 360 is shorter than the 318,i have replaced my tranny once, and about to rebuild my 8.25 on it it has bout 200,000 miles and i was still smocking GT Mustangs with it,its being a great truck, but one thing i did noticed is that manny people have asked me if i did anithing to the motor, and to the honest truth, all i did is put a Throttle body spacer, high flow cat and 3 inch all the way, many dakotas that i have seen and got next to me at the stop light, they get a surprise when we take of,one thing tho,if you get any 318,or 360 make sure they have the aluminum intake on them cause that plastick they put in some of the is crap, they crack and leak,i have done some work on them and it always end up un replacing yhat plenum piece,my dakota is a 97 slt model, and its a gas hogi get like 14mpg in the city and like 19mpg on the hwy,but no matter what i put in the back is is the same mpg even with my uncles 24' trailer...good luck with your build man.

I had several older 318's in some Mopar "A" bodies back in the day. I had a 318 duster that ran mid 15's in the quarter with basically an intake & 4bbl carb. Also a pinion snubber for traction. Other than that it was stock.

It's a good engine, & the block is cast thicker than an SBC.

It will take more cash to produce the same HP as a SBC because parts will cost more. So many people build SBC's that the aftermarket parts can be had for cheap.

Anyway, I'm a Mopar guy from back in the 1970's & 80's so I'll be doing the 318 in whichever jeep of mine needs a motor first. The motor mounts can probably be swapped or copied from the donor vehicle.

Just curious, is the 700R4 really that much stronger than a 727 or was it because it has an extra gear that appealed to you?

I only ask because I have seen the 727 stand up to some serious abuse.

An example would be Bill "Maverick" Golden's Little Red Wagon.

318 will always be known as the gutless wonder.
Back in the day (waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back) I used to blow the doors of 318 Dusters in my '68 Nova with a 307cid, Holley 500cfm 2 barrel, and a mildly built Powerglide.
