Default 3000 rpm idle at start

I have a 98 XJ that has a extremely high idle at start. I changed the head, recently due to it being cracked. Got it all put back together and now a high idle. I changed IAC, TPS, checked all vacuum lines with no luck. Any ideas? fixing to drag it down to a mechanic it’s got me burned up!

just a guess, but did you readjust the throttle cable after the head install? Maybe it popped out of position. There is a video somewhere that shows how to do it. Involves pushing in the adjuster deal on the cable on top of the engine, then going into the jeep and pushing the throttle down to the floor so it self adjusts and pops back into place....or something like that.

That's a classic leaky intake manifold gasket. It's not uncommon to get the intake not fully seated when re-installing.

Yeah, it's probably sitting on top of one of the locating pins instead on being fully seated.

Agreed with both above. When I had to remove my intake/exhaust to replace the freeze plugs I had a heck of a time getting the intake seated properly.

Thanks guys, I tried the tv cable adjust but it’s mainly for transmission shift problems. I probably need to try and reseat the intake. Trying that tomorrow and hoping for the best. I’m a FNG in the thread but thanks for the ideas.
