Default 30-43 tranny compatible with a 30-40

I have a 1991 Cherokee that the tranny just went bad. The tranny is a 30-43. I had a friend give me a 30-40 tranny. not sure what year it is but are they compatible? Can I change something from my tranny to the new tranny to make it work. Any help would be great. Thank you. Mike

what the hell are you talking about?

If it's a 5-speed you have an AX-15 transmission
if it's an automatic you have an AW-4 transmission

I'm guessing it's automatic, so any AW-4 will work, although you want one from a 1991-2001 Cherokee to allow it to just bolt up to your transfer case. Use your stock TCU computer with the new tranny.

mm ok this is weird as ****. Never come across their internal model coding before, but you seem to have the numbers mixed up a bit:

From Novak Conversions (http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/aw4.htm):

"The AW4 may be identified as a model #30-43LE for 2wd versions and as a model #40-30LE for 4wd versions."

so there is our answer. I was still correct. Any AW-4 (this is what it's commonly referred to as) will work, however the fact that the replacement one is a 4wd transmission makes it impossible to use with without rebuilding the transmission to swap the tailshaft

sorry to bring up a old post.. but i just aquired a 1996 cherokee 4x4 sport with a 4.5inch lift and it has the 30-43LE. IT RUNS LIKE CRAP!! after first gear , 2nd bogs, 3rd bog, 4th bogs. doesnt go above 2500rpm either and shift at about that.( that is manual shifting) ...
when i have it in (D) its just revves up to 2500rpm until im guessing 4th?? and bogs making 0 power.
maybe this is why is doesnt build power??
looking for advice.
AGAIN! sorry to bring up a old post

I think you posted about this before and poster @lawsoncl identified the issue, and has written a comprehensive guide on exactly how it can be rectified, by various means

In my case, for a '96 this means buying used trans from '94-96' and thats a direct fit

a '97 will work with very minor wiring change

he details what pre '94 are also a direct bolt up, but we dont have pre 94 XJ out here

later ones can be made to work, may be cheaper if you are an ok AT mechanic

Thanks to him for writing such a comprehensive and ***-saving post

im sure i did and i do appologize. just want a rather cheap solution weather itd be to buy a used transmission or try to make the one i have work. but a detail thread or way of going about it would help me a ton more then just hear say. i do appologize for the multiple post but EVERYTHING i look for about a 96 xj sport either comes up with a 95 or 97

Kastein put together the awesome compilation of info you're referring to. I got an education myself after making the same mistake of putting a 98 aw4 into an 89. :}
