Since you have the axles to swap in with the 3.55 gears, then go for it. It will make a difference, but not as much as lower gears. It's not like your spending any money to do this.

I did this exact swap and was running 33" tires.

Originally had 3.07 gears (dana's) and found a guy selling the 8.25 with the trac-lock for a few hundred bucks. It came out of an auto so it had 3.55 gears so it was a little bonus as well as a front axle to complete the package. (He was doing Dana 60's)

Bolted right up and I felt it made a pretty good improvement. 3.07 gears and 33's is a turd. Never could use 5th gear. With the 3.55 gears 5th gear was back. Wasnt as good as it could have been, but much better than before.

If they are free, do it. If it costs you a hundred bucks or so, do it.

The swap isnt that hard. I did it solo with 2 jacks in a day.

And to the OP.... take another look at your tranny... The Puke-out mercifully died in 1989... So some 89's have it and some have the AX-15. 90's should all have the AX-15... but Jeep did some strange stuff in that era as Chryco took over...
Ya I was backwards.. 4 cly's got the 4.10 gears..

Sorry I was not thinking right when I had posted that..

i dont mind spending the money i just want my power back! hahaaha and i figured since i have the axles with 3.55's i would just throw them in! now will the 3.55 or the 3.07 carrier support 4.10 gears?? or will i have to change out the whole carrier also??? cause if the 3.55's carrier cant support 4.10's then ill just keep my axles in and do the 4.10's with new carriers and lockers! hahah thanks guys!
