27spline to a 29 spline axle swapQ
Found a 29 spline 8.25 axle to replace my 27.
Are the carriers that different or can one just swap out the spider gears (guts) and axles instead of the the whole axle housing?
If the outer bearing is the same, I don't see why not.
And it would be a heck of alot cheaper for me, let alone faster.
Thanks E

What is your reason for wanting to change in the first place? That will make it somewhat easier to answer you on 2 fronts. Is it strength only, larger tires or what?

The housings are different. I had a bare 27 spline housing & a 29 spline shaft would not go into the housing. I think where the race for the bearing goes is smaller.
Good thing you answered Fred.
Ready..
Traded up for a '96 2dr, 4cyl, 5spd, 2wd, 4.10's and want to make MY version of Racejeep. But with a 5.2 from a 95 grand cherokee mated to a NV3550 and if I can't make this 27 spline 8.25 tougher/more reliable (with about 275hp/300+ ftlbs), I'm fabbing up a D44 from a '74 J-10 pickup that I scrapped and put to use either a 3.31, 3.54, or 3.73 gears with a Posi carrier that I've had stored away.
That's why..
I figured that axles are about less than 1/16" larger but they both taper up toward the flange. So, it should be close, BUT have never read of this.
Also, the axles are about 30ea and probably another 7-10 for the spiders.
That's lots cheaper and quicker for me. OH, the 'donor' is a 3.07 gear. Not the gear that I'd really want.
I'd have to crunch the numbers of 5th gear in the NV + the diff to see where I am in the cam.
It's not going to be fuel injected as of yet. Motor was already built for another project and my first Chrysler.

There is one housing for the 8.25 since 69. Only minor suspension changes and changes to the brakes bolted on. swap the carriers and the matching shafts will fit. There was something else wrong if yours wouldn't fit.
