Default 27 or 29 spline? Help me out here.

What is the quickest way to tell if I have 27 or 29 spline axles in my 8.25. Its a 96 and I know that some of them are 27 and some 29 from the research I've done on the net. Can anyone give me a trick to figuring the spline count on my axles without pulling them?

What is the build date? It can be found on the sticker inside the drivers side door jam.

I am not sure where they are located on the 8.25,but you should be able to get the serial numbers of the axle tubes or diff and look them up on line.

Both 8.25s that I currently have had a sticker wrapped around the axle tube with the part numbers. Both of the stickers fell off as soon as I touched them so it is a good possibility that the info is no longer there.

It has been found that some late 96s had the 29 spline installed when the factory ran out of 27 splines. A couple of members on here have found that out when ordering a locker for a late 96 27 spline and it turned out they had a 29 spline.

manufacture date of 5-96. There are two tags bolted to the diff cover one reads 128S maybe 1285 the other reads 32.

What does all this mean?????

5-96 is in the last 2-3 months of production so it is 50/50 as to which axles you have. One of the tags bolted to the diff cover should be the gear ratio. It should say either "3.55" for automatic trans or "3.07" for manual trans. I have no idea what either of the numbers you have listed would mean.

i remember reading this thread a few days ago, and i was reading wikipedia's xj page and it says..

  • 1991 – 1996 : Chrysler 8.25", c-clip, non-ABS, 27-spline axleshafts.
  • 1997 – 2001 : Chrysler 8.25", c-clip, non-ABS, 29-spline axleshafts.
..so i figured id throw that in there for the info, but you guys beat me to it.

Yup, the site just didn't take into consideration that some late model 96's did get the 29 spline though because they ran out of the 27 spline, as previously noted.
