Default 242 Transfer Case bearing removal help

Am trying my hand at rebuilding a 242 case. I am looking for suggestions on the removal of the caged Torrington bearing on the rear case half. Novak suggests a slide hammer but I am not aware of one that small to be able to attach to the lip of the bearing. Also suggestions as to which RTV to use would be welcomed as well. The searches I have done seem to suggest just about every type! I would think some are better for this application than others.

The slide hammer people talk about is a blind-hole bearing puller, like this one. That is the technically correct tool.

You can fabricate a one-time puller. Find a socket that fits snugly inside. Find a bolt that fits through the square ratchet end of the socket. Put bolt in socket, put socket in hole, tack weld (or glue) the socket to the bearing race. Then drill a hole in a bar and put a nut on the bolt, and puuulll the bolt/socket/bearing out of the hole.

Or just leave the bearing in there. It only stabilizes the rear of the output shaft and unless it is broken or something its not worth worry about it

For sealing the shell back together, nothing beats Right Stuff RTV. Its pretty expensive but it works perfectly. Run a small bead around the edge and then spread it evenly with your finger on the contact surface, let it skim up for a couple of minutes, then bolt the halves together. Wait till the morning to fill with fluid.

Any questions on rebuilding just ask, better to take a long time once than have to do it multiple times

I remove those by breaking out all the needles and needle cage. Then a diamond ball cutter on my dremmal to cut almost all the way through the bearing frame. Then hit with a punch next to the cut and drive to the center. It will break as it is very hard steel. And then simply twist out the now smaller diameter frame with a pair of needle nose pliers.
