242 TO 231 Conversion... worth it ??

Default 242 TO 231 Conversion... worth it ??

My 242 is actin funny, so i can come across a 231 attached to a 5 speed outta a 93 4.0L wrangler for 75$.....


How much of a pain is this swap gonna be and is it worth it??

the PO did the hack and tap in my 242 and it leaks like a POS

Yes it's worth it, and if you have to swap inputs. It can be done in under 3 hours...

You won't know until you pull yours. See there are 6 different lengths and 2 different spline counts...

Would that be the input shaft on the transfer case? or the output shaft on the trans???

the above posts are wrong. it'll bolt right in, the input on the 93 case is the same as your 98.

hrmmm... OK cool... what about the selection lever .. will my 242 one go up to the 231 ?

Well the 242 is leaking and smoking atf on the cat, pops pot of 4wd in 4L and part time 4wd... and is buggin me

Replace the seal and adjust the linkage. Check the engine and tranny mounts. When they go bad nothing stays in 4WD.

Hmmm thats way cheaper than buying a new SYE... i just picked up this 231j for teh cheap tho...

so motor and tranny mounts could keep it from staying in 4wd ?

Definitely, bad mounts allow everything to move on acceleration so you may want to check all of that out before swapping
