231 bolt up to AX15?
I'm about to convert my 88 MJ to 4x4 and i need to make sure that my 231 t-case out of my 93 xj with a AW4 will bolt up to a AX15 wich i'm planning to buy. It has a ax15 in it right now but its 2wd. If my research is right they're both 23 spline but if they'll bolt together is what i really need to know.

AX-15 should be 23-spline all the way up (I've heard that some of the early ones are not, but I've yet to verify this.)
AW4 should be 23-spline from 1991 forward.
So, sounds like you'll be fine. The pattern of the mounting studs never changed - and it's based on the old D300 "Round" pattern.

and the ax15 are short shaft up to 94/95
and long shaft after 95
so you wold need to change your input gear on your tc

However, you can also use the XJ/MJ/ZJ transfer case adapter housing on the TJ/YJ transmission to return it to XJ/MJ/ZJ clocking. Save the TJ adapter - chances are, someone is doing a buildup that doesn't mind hammer or cut-and-weld work on their chassis, and you could get a few bucks for it.
