2004 cherokee 4.0 harmonic balancer
This is for a 2004 jeep grand cherokee 4.0 2 wheel drive
I was driving and goosed the gas it a little so I wouldnt catch a red light, once I got through the light I lost my power steering, thought the jeep died but it didnt... then the temp gauge went up so I pulled over thinking the serp belt broke, it was still on. I started it up again and seen the belt wasnt turning. I noticed the bottom pulley was pulled out like 1/2". Never dealt with pullys before but after doing a search on youtube I see this was called a harmonica balancer. I had an aluminium bat and figured if I could tap it back in so it would align with the other pullys, its worked, I put the belt back on and made it home, When I got home I checked the pully and it was still in place, didnt move at all...
So my question is, can this job be done without taking out the radiator? I watched a few videos, some people took out the radiator and worked from the top and one gut did the job from underneath and no mention of the radiator being removed. If I take the fan and fan cover out it looks like plenty of room.. Had anyone ever done this job in this year jeep? 1999 - 2004

If all you have is an electric fan, it's pretty easy to remove them as a unit, then there's plenty of room. If you have a clutch fan, the hardest part is loosening the mounting nut. Be aware that it might be left hand thread.
A few bits of advice based on my experience. Replace the seal behind the harmonic balancer while you're there. I found some of the harmonic balancer pullers are long enough they will hit the radiator, and a shorter bolt that fits the puller might be needed. For installing the new balancer, get a longer bolt or piece of all-thread, a couple of thick washers, and a nut of the same thead size. Put a light smear grease or oil on the balancer snout, inside and out to help it slide on and so the new seal doesn't tear. Get the balancer started by hand. Put the nut all the way up on the bolt, then the washers, and thread the bolt into the crank as far as it will go. Make sure you've got plenty of threads engaged. Then use a wrench on the nut to push the balancer on. Do NOT start with the original bolt to push it on. It's not long enough and will only engage a few threads at first, and you risk ripping those threads out as you start tightening the bolt.

I think there's a little more room in the WJ than the XJ, but not a lot more. Yes, he's in the wrong section, but he found someone who knows both anyway.
