Default 2001 xj sport auto trans help

ok guys i am not the smartest cookie in the jar but my transmission fluid is dark and smells a little overcooked........its not black and its not giving me problems...yet...so i am just wondering how should i go about this issue?
should i do a "slow flush" as ive seen in other threads..if so how would i go about that? or what are my other options.. because as far as i can tell it isnt slipping, and im trying to be proactive any input would be great
thanks
Josh

U'll get different opinions on this but we did an tranny pan drop and changed the filter/screen. About a month later, pulled the drain plug and re-filled. Year and a half later, still red/pink color.

Isn't atf4 synthetic? I used that in my wifes neon, and it was.

When I bought my '99 with 110,000 on it, the trans fluid was somewhat dark. In the 15,000 miles I've owned it, I've changed it 3 times using Dexron. It is now staying a bright pinkish red color and the trans works great. Changing the trans fluid on the AW4 is no more difficult than changing motor oil. I've considered dropping the pan and changing the filter, but I understand the dipstick tube can be an issue.

I recommend using Dex/Merc III compatible. Widely available anywhere.

I don't know what trans I have in mine, or how to tell, just bought it. I didn't know you could change the fluid without dropping the pan?

OE fluid was dex3. Chrysler has since changed the reccommended fluid from dex3 to atf+4.

If you search around the boards, you will find that most everyone has better luck with dex3 though. Its really a matter of how much you want to pay. Ive seen no gains or losses running either fluid.

Pretty simple really. If your truck is an automatic, you have the aw4. They only used one auto trans for the cherokee.
