Default 2001 engine problems

I'm a mail carrier and I just bought a 2001 righthand drive Cherokee. It has the 4.0 engine with 124k miles. The motor runs fine until I shut it off and start it back after a few minutes, then it will miss and run rough for a few minutes, after which it smooths out and runs good. This was causing the check engine light to come on. My mechanic tried to pull the code, but his computer wouldn't read it. So, he put in new plugs which were needed. I drove it today and as usual it ran good for about 3 hours, then when I shut it off and started back up, it missed and ran bad the rest of the time on my route, about 2 and half hours. I let it sit about 20 minutes, drove home and it ran perfect. The problems sounds like an electrical one to me, but where? I think I'm going to go to a dealer and get it checked, as much as I hate the local Chrysler dealership. Any ideas anyone?

This is called the famous heatsoak issue, what causes this is the hot manifold letting the injectors get hot enough that fuel wont get through usally injector #3 I beleive. My 2000 did this till I got the 5.00 dollar heat sheild from the stealership and slapped her on, you could also use the hi-temp sheilding for plug wires cut to fit onto the injectors along with that sheild.I did this and haven't had a problem since. If you do this fix you should be fine unless you have other problems, but it sounds just like what I had,30 to 35. bucks and you should be good to go.Name: dance.gif

Went to Autozone and had them hook their hand held computer up to my Jeep, and it showed a misfire on #3 cylinder.....which corresponds to what 413 max said. Went to the dealership and they didn't know what to order in the way of a heat shield. I am going to try a fix myself, and rig up something to help reflect the heat. I'll let you know what happens.

You should try the exhaust heat shield wrap and just wrap a little bit around each injector. They sell it at advanced auto parts.

Okay, I tried wrapping the heat shield wrap around the injectors, and it accomplished nothing. The vehicle is still doing it.....runs fine until you shut it off after a few hours of use, then when you start it back up, it misses and sometimes dies, then starts running smooth. I was told it might be a bad oxygen sensor. Anyone's thoughts on that would be welcome.

Cleaned up the unnecessary bickering and moved to OEM Tech.

Let's keep on topic without bickering.

Thanks.

o2 sensors are a possibility. But unless you can get a code reader to pull somethin, it's gonna be a bit of guess work. I've got a similar issue and best we can figure is it's a bad wire. The more tune up stuff you do, the more possibilities you eliminate. Plugs, wires, cap, rotor, TPS, iac valve, CPS, o2 sensors, fuel pump, wiring, etc. are all possible.
