I just bought a 2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport with the 4.0 engine. Since day 1 it has been hard to start, I have to crank it 2-4 seconds for it to turn over. The only time it starts right up is after it has sat overnight for 12 hours then it starts with no issues. This leads me to believe it is not a fuel pressure issue. I have changed the plugs, coil rail and put in an optima battery. I have also changed the thermostat to a 180 degree unit and installed hood vents to cool the engine compartment. Even after sitting at work for 8 hours and the engine is completely cool it will still crank for 2-4 seconds before starting and does the same thing if I turn it off and back on 2 minutes later after it has warmed up. I live n Tampa, FL so it is not a cold air issue either. I have asked multiple diesel mechanics ( all I have access to at work ) and none of them know what it could be. Any help would be appreciated since I plan on modifying and keeping this Jeep for many years

my 1990 XJ starts slow like that too... but it always starts. My 2K1 starts faster, but neither of them are insta-start trucks.
But you can try getting your starter checked and make sure it's putting out the right voltages. Maybe get the CPS tested or replaced (does it idle poorly and/or lack power?)?
2-4 seconds doesn't sound like something I'd be unduly worried about though, just my personal opinion.

Have had a lot of problems with bad grounds, check and clean anyone you can find ,may help. I replaced a battery and starter and it ended up being a ground problem.

It has plenty of power and idle fairly smooth, every once in the while the idle will "stumble" and you can see the tachometer drop by maybe 50 rpm but it only lasts for a second. I am going to run a can of "Sea Foam" through it and see if that helps. I will also check the starter and all groung cables....thanks for the advice
