Default 2001 cat question

[/IMG]

I keep getting mixed answers in my searches. So I took a pic of my xj. Looks like a resonator to me but I've been told I have a 3rd cat along with the two mini cats. My reasoning is the CEL is on and the code is P0432 so I'm trying to figure out what I need to do to repair it

that's the cat. The two up front at the manifold are the pre cats. I was looking at alldata on the 2000, and that's what it shows. I think the '00 and '01's are the same. You can try to change out the 02 sensors, clear your codes and see if it comes back. a long shot, but it's easier than changing the cat.

my '00 is parked at work, not in my driveway. otherwise i would just go out and look at it. but--i thought there would be an upstream and a downstream o2 sensor. one close to the manifold and one after the last cat. Unfortunately for us there are 4 oxygen sensors. two before the pre cats and two after the pre cats. it does not show an oxygen sensor after the last "single" cat that's close to the muffler. that's from what i can tell looking at the alldata website for the 2000 xj. Maybe someone else can verify or give an explaination as to why there is no o2 sensor at the last cat.

for the model year 2000 they show a california emissions and a federal emissions. the federal emissions looks like the 1999 and earlier models without the pre cats.; which shows 2 oxygen sensors. the californis emissions shows the pre cats with 4 o2 sensors. I'm almost positive all the 2000 and 2001 XJ's have the california emissions regardless of where they were sold.

Nope. My 2000 has the Federal exhaust system. 2 O2 sensors. One under the intake and one behind the Cat.

I've been 'dealing' with this same code P0432 on my '01 XJ for a year. I think I have a fried pre-cat due to a cracked head and burning coolant for a month or two before I figured out what was wrong.

You may be able to get away w/replacing the downstream O2 Sensor on the rear-most pre-cat, but likely the pre-cats will need to be replaced. Hard to know for sure.

Also, several have had problems w/Bosch O2 Sensors on '00-'01 XJs... suggestions to stick to NTK (I believe the brand) O2 Sensors.

I'm planning to swap out my Pre-Cats along w/a new Header as soon as time/money allow. I'll follow along this thread to see what you come up with.

2000-2001 Cali Emissions package = (4) O2 sensors
2000-2001 Federal Emissions package - (2) O2 sensors

Us Cali package guys got the shaft.....

I bit the bullet and replaced all four of my O2s with Denso units. Not a problem since, and i got 1.5mpg back.

Here is some data I found:

Trouble Code: P0432
Catalyst Efficiency Below Normal (Bank 2)
Trouble Code Conditions:
Engine speed at 1200-1700 rpm in closed loop with the throttle open for over 2 minutes, ECT Sensor more than 147ºF, MAP Sensor signal from 15.0-21.0" Hg, and the PCM detected the switch rate of the rear O2 reached 70% of the switch rate of the front O2.
Possible Causes:
* Air leaks in at the exhaust manifold or exhaust pipes
* Base engine problems (high coolant or engine oil consumption)
* Catalytic converter damaged or has failed
* Front O2 older (aged) than the rear O2 (O2 is lazy)

I think I'm gonna go with trying the o2 sensors.. the jeep only has 50k on it original miles .. I am the second owner. Praying I don't have the cracked head issue .

2000 XJ I also have just two O2 sensors. One on the down pipe, one behind the Cat. No pre Cats
