Default 2001 4.0 master rebuild kit

Rebuilding my 2001 4.0
Block is at the shop,
Looking for a quality master kit (pistons, rings, bearings, gaskets, timing, cam/lifters),, most places don't list brand of components.
Looking for FelPro, melling, etc.

Any pointers?

Thanks,
Slack

Also,, Why does the 2000-2001 kit typ cost $200.00 more than the 91-99 kits?

I have rebuilt many Chevy small blocks and always bought my components separately. I prefer Clevite 77 bearings and Perfect Circle rings. Felpro for gaskets. Since we were running Stock class drags, we used GM parts for everything else.

This! I never liked the idea of someone else choosing my parts. Generally speaking you get compromise parts when you buy a kit. By selecting your individual parts you can pick exactly the parts you want. Besides that the machine shop will need to determine what size pistons you need based on the cylinder re-bore. I rebuilt my first engine back in 1971 and have built thousands since then.

The only difference I can think of is the pistons. Older ones have thicker rings than the 00+. Other then that, the rebuild kits should be nearly identical. But $200? That seems a bit excessive.

When I rebuilt the engine for my 01, I think grand total on parts, I was in it somewhere around $400-500. I pieced it together like others said to do.

You can look over my build thread. I think most of the engine build was in the first couple pages. Here is a quick list from it.

$20 - Pair of motor mounts DEA A2572
$25 - Lifters Engine Tech L2011
$12 - Intake/exhaust gasket Felpro MS93094
$15 - Timing chain Melling 385
$5 - Timing chain guide OMIX 1745370
$22 - Head bolts Ebay CPW1441
$68 - Crank and rod bearings Clevite CB960A and MS1947A (Do not cheap out on bearings!)
$29 - Lower gasket kit Felpro CS8169-3 (this is for 99 and earlier. Different rear main seal for 00 and up)
$128 - Pistons and rings Ebay CPW3758
$12 - Champion copper spark plugs
$10 - Piston ring compressor OEM 27039

I've used master kits from Falcon Global on two builds with great results.
eBay link

They assemble their kits from known US manufacturers.
If a kit doesn't list the manufacturer of each of the components - assume its made in China.

What type of rings would you suggest for a stock rebuild?
Also, looks like Melling is the only choice for a stock cam?
