2000 XJ randomly won't start
Hi all,
I've got a random intermittent issue that I absolutely can't figure out. When I go to start my Jeep it will crank and sputter a bit but won't start. To get it running I have to press the gas pedal to the floor and then crank it over. It starts and sounds like it might be misfiring which clears within two to three seconds. Now if I take my foot off the gas pedal it immediately dies as if it's not getting any fuel. I can repeat the process to get it started again and keep my foot on the pedal to keep it running. I've found that running it for no more than 30 seconds clears this issue and it then runs normally as if nothing is wrong. At this point, I can also turn it off and restart it without having to have my foot on the gas pedal. It starts and idles normally. This happened last year when it started to get cooler but it wasn't a consistent problem throughout the winter. It hasn't happened in at least eight months but we've had a few cooler days and it started doing this again. I brought it to my mechanic who has a much better scan tool than I have and there were no codes thrown. I also left it with him for a week and half and of course the problem didn't surface. I'm really at a loss as to where to start. The only thing that seems to be consistent is that it happens in cooler/cold weather. When it happened last year I installed a new TPS and coilpack but before I reload the parts cannon, I'd like to get to the bottom of why this happens. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Matt

I have had this happen. It happens around the time I need to replace the battery or the contacts need to be cleaned. ( I know that sounds crazy but there it is.) Other than that clean where the TPS is and the intake as well as put a can of seafoam in a gas tank that has about 5 gallons of gas and run that through it.
Try resetting the electronic control module? Turn the key from off to just before the starter (when all the lights light up) engages 5 times in quick succession, then try starting it on the 6th turn

It could possibly be a stuck injectors that are flooding out cylinders as the pressure bleeds off the fuel rail (i.e. why you have to hold it to the floor to clear the excess fuel).
