I've got a Cherokee with the automatic 4.0l in it. The other morning i started it up and it started squealing really loud and i thought it was just the sperpentine belt doing it but it started getting louder and then i started smelling like rubber burning or something so i shut the engine off. I turned it back on and it was still doing it. So i turned it off again and waited. Tryed it one more time and then it stopped doing it but it sounded like one the my pulleys were some what grinding or started to sound pretty rough so i went up front to look at it and it souns like it's coming either from the A/C pulley or the Alternator. But the noise was coming from that side of the engine in that region. It stopped once i drove it for a minute but this morning it made that griding/rough sound again once i pulled out the driveway and got it up to speed and it got louder so i let off the gas and it quiet down then stopped. What does this sound like? The engine has 1600000 miles on it and i keep the engine maintaned.

Since its that bad just look at all the pullies. It'll be the one with all the nasty black crap all over it. If they all have black crap (burnt belt), then its gonna be the one that looks the worst.
If that doesn't work, then yank the belt and spin 'em.
Chances are its just an idler pulley, though. I think they are something like $15.
I got lucky with mine. The idler pulley seized and just ripped the belt up instantly. Didn't need to pull the belt, it was gone already.
Was easy to figure out from there.

Wowzers thats a lot of miles, maybe just get a new car? LOL I agree with G.O.D up there^ don't pull off the belt you'll probably be able to see which pulley is bad, when the engine is on you might even be able to see it if you look close. Either way if it's an idler or A/C it's no biggy

I think you added an extra zero in there. If I did my counting right you claim to have 1.6 million miles on yout truck.
If my assumption is correct, he's got 160,000 miles. And that could easily be tripled.
