What happens when you try to read the codes?

You only get the sputtering and stalling in reverse, shifting to D is fine? What happens if you unplug the connector for the NSS after it's started and shift to R? Still sputter?

I would guess there is a wire rubbed some where and when in R the drivetrain "torques" the other way and the rubbed wire touches metal

Wait so I'm curious. When you put a scanner on, it doesn't connect?

I have this problem. My reader is Maaco and works on every other vehicle I've tried it on.

So the scanner is no good then. Was curious if the Odb port was no good.
