Not being one to believe every rumor or opinion on the internet, I did a little research.

In the original post on NAXJA, the counter guy seemed to think that the Airtex and Precision part numbers were the same, so he assumed they were made by the same company.

It appears that Precision is its own company, manufacturing its own parts. Talking to my local O'Reilly's, they said they no longer carry Airtex pumps because of the controversy surrounding them about their failure rate.

I just talked to the guy behind the counter and he replaced my airtex with a precision unit and said precision repackaged all the leftover airtex units as precision but they should be out of circulation now.he said precision makes better pumps now!

If you say the Precision Pump you bought had the same model/part number on it as the Airtex pump, then you may have gotten one of those repackaged "leftover" pumps.

If the counter guy knew what you said he knew, it looks like he boned you. Hope at least he gave you a reacharound.

well I had already filed a precision unit from O'Reilly's and installed it I figured I'd take my hair to text back and go ahead and get a new one just for the heck of it since he gave me a precision unit I'm taking it back to O'Reilly's and get my money back and I didn't know they gave reach arounds darn it

FWIW, I'm running a Carter in my '98 XJ and not a problem. Gauge works great. That was my primary problem and reason for replacing the original fuel pump--sender was shot. It was ~$170 on Amazon, which was lucky for me because I had $125 in Amazon gift cards lying around that paid for most of it.

I paid $145 + tax for a Precision, but I have a commercial account.

Looks like we're both right. Precision repackaged Airtex, then started making their own. Interesting.
