2000 Cherokee Sport AC Noise Issue

2000 Cherokee Sport AC Noise Issue
Just purchased this used vehicle and I've noticed that the AC works fine when I'm driving, but when I come to a stop, or have started it cold, it seems to struggle.
I hear: soft grinding noises and sometimes it sounds like the car is struggling more and more
However, once I start going forward the problems seem to disappear.
Strange occurrence: One time while it was struggling I thought I heard something snap, and could have sworn I saw a rubber piece on the road in my rear view mirror. I'm not sure if was something I hit, however. I immediately turned off the AC and then later turned it on again to notice it was working fine.
I'm very confused. Any opinions?
