Your tranny is either an auto AW4 or manual AX15. The 231/242 is the transfer case for selecting 2 or 4... Your gonna need one of those.

I did this to a 90 xj I had back in high school. I just picked up a xj that a guy totaled and only paid 350 for it. Wheeled it till I got my 89 I have now. Gave the 90 to my dad. Was easy swap. Also lucked up and the wreak xj had a non disc d30 and a d44 in rear so I came out on top.

You need a transmission from a 4wd xj...

The tranny on a 2wd is longer than on a 4wd. You'll need to swap it out.

Yea... you still need a tranny from a 4x4 unless you want to do some work to your current tranny...

And you still need to decide which t-case you want to use...the np 231 or the 242...
231 has a bit more after market support and is a bit more popular in the wheeling scene... 231 is a part time only case, 242 has the full time option...

Ive had both, i prefer the 231 just because its more simplistic...currently my rig has a 242..no complaints with it though.

Ok.. Cause you asked what a np231/242 transmission is.. Hence my explanation.. You still need a tranny from 4wd XJ.
