Default 2000 4.0 lots of white smoke

Not sure on the miles, but originally started with a head gasket job, turned into a head replacement job, replaced the 0331 head with a 0630 head. Did a little fab job on minting the coil pack rail, but started it up and lots of white smoke coming out the exhaust, did I miss something?? I indicated the head and it was only .003 out of flatness, when I pulled the head back off all cylinders looked like they had coolant in them, not sure if they got coolant in them from me taking the head off but I don't think it was. Not sure the history on this motor as far as how long the owner drove it with a blown head gasket. Are the blocks known to crack?? I have access to a mill at work, should I deck the head anyways?? What's a safe amount to take off, or should I keep it minimal? Any help would be appreciated.

Knocker,,,,,, head gasket you used was probably not the right one for the head replacement. This is why you have coolant in your bores. (maybe) subsequently the exhaust (i.e. white smoke).

How clean did you get the deck on the block before re-assembling?
I stuff rags in piston bores, use a brass scraper, then scotchguard pad and then vacuum the hell out of it.
the head you got, was it new? or off another motor directly?
if off another motor, have it decked for sure, and then watch as it is "indiced" or "indexed" as they say via cross plane and longitudially for flatness. A good machine shop can tell you for sure the integrity of the head ....flatness, valve leak, etc etc. and they are usually pretty reasonable in price for that purpose.

head gaskets are pretty fluid to allow for some imperfection, but not much.

Are you sure you torqued the head bolts (hopefully you got new ones? with your gasket), in the proper sequence ( three times around? ) to the exact specification with a calibrated torque wrench?

I know my questions might seem mundane and address the obvious, but having that info from you can eliminate many suggestions going forward.

hope it helps and best of luck!

I work at a machine shop so when I indicated the head it was in a 4' surface block with a .0001 gradual indicator, the head gasket is the same between the 2 heads, and both the head n block were stoned till shiney. And ya I used a brand new snap on torque wrench for this build, and yes on the new head bolts, but their fel-pro, these past couple jobs it seems like fel-pro is starting to slip s little, ill deck the head, try a set of VR bolts n see where it takes me, ill keep ya updated

How long did you let the engine run? It may need some time to clear any of the junk that may have gotten in the exhaust during the repair.

Is it big fluffy clouds of steam, or more like smoke?

I never saw where you answered the question, "Was it a new head?"

By your later responses, it must not have been.

Probably a bad head, not any error on your part.

Lots of puffy smoke, antifreeze coming outta the exhaust, yes its a used head, but its 0630 casting which I've heard good things about. If I have time tonight ill take the head off again n let ya know how it goes. And yes I changed the oil and filter 3 times now.

Your particular unit may be bad, not the 0630 castings in general.

It may be cracked internally, which you will never be able to see. And/or the crack may open up only when warmed up.

If funds allow, I think it may be time for a brand new head casting at least, if not one complete with valves and springs.

The frustration level with the one you have now is tremendous.

Good luck in any case.

I just made brackets to come off the valve cover bolts n flipped the original bolts n used a nut, nothing fancy, just wanted to make it sound like I spent a lot of effort n skills, hahahha. I hope its not a bad head, I don't think the owner wants to hear that, but I'll find out where n if he can get a different one. I would like to put a new casting on but im thinking that's not in his budget. And the motor doesn't have to get warm to start puffin white smoke, its blowing it right from the first click of the key.

That head is done.

That's part of the risk of used parts. Sometimes you save money, sometimes you don't.
