2000 2wd tranny into a 1996?
I have seen write ups for 4wd but just can't seem to find the info on the 2wd.
I have a 96 with a bad tranny and I have a 2000 with a good tranny I want to put it in. Physically it shouldn't be a problem but electronically im not so sure. If any one knows of a way to make it work id greatly appreciate that info. Thanks in advance.

You are wanting to put a 2000 AW4 in a 1996 - is that correct?
Are both 2WD?

You'll have to swap the rear case (extension) from the 1996 to the 2000 so it can accommodate the 1996 transmission output speed sensor.
Swap 1996 transmission output speed sensor rotor from the 1996 to the 2000.
Swap the 1996 speedometer drive gear from the 1996 to the 2000.
The 2000 transmission input speed sensor should remain installed (with no connector) to fill the hole.

You may want to consider installing a new speedometer drive gear while you have it open.
These gears get ate up over the years.
I just looked it up and found that the 1996 and 2000 speedo drive gear are the same part number.
OEM part number 83503704. Dealer should have it.
Here are pics of a new gear and it installed.
