On my 93 XJ the headlights would come on when I put it in drive then stay on until the vehicle was shut off. Now that I pulled the buzzer box out the only time the headlights come on is with the switch, however it could be a Canadian vehicle requirement as daytime running lights are mandatory by law in Canada.
I wasn't sure if that's the case in the US and thought I would mention it I would hate to see anyone get a ticket for something I posted.

Its gotta be something Canadian, Because when I feel like blowing stop signs in my town at night I kill the lights and roll through. (i'm flat blacked all the way, looks like a stealth bomber) In the US we had too many people complaining about glares from daytime running lights when they were introduced in the mid early 90s so the law never really caught on I guess. Plus I never understood their purpose, if you cant see the car in the daylight than you shouldn't be driving anyway, no need for lights during the day IMO. Do you guys have to wear seatbelts in canada?

Canada has a law that lights must be on during the day. The US doesnt have this law, but some auto makers did it to all their vehicles instead of doing it to some and not others.
Phoenix,
It's true that other drivers should be able to see a 2 or 3 thousand pound hunk of metal coming down the street towards them lol I'm thinking it's more for dusk, dawn and bad weather conditions like heavy fog, snow etc that probably sparked it dunno for sure.
And yes we also have seat belt laws up here so the "click it or ticket" rule definitely applies.
Thank you all for your responses, this forum is amazing when it comes to helping fellow Jeep owners
