2.5TD need to refill water
hello
i got my cherokee 1995 2.5TD for abouth 3 weeks ago.
which runs very well. However, it's leaking just a small amount of oil between the engine and the transmision.
but whats make me worried, is that i have had to refill the coolant two times in 3 weeks... i have been driving far on the highway the last days, and it's quite hot in sweden right now. should i be worried, or is it normal for the water to evaporate? - i have not seen any oil in the water or the ather way around.

Welcome to the forum. With oil out back, either a valve cover could be leaking and running down the bell housing. Or the rear main seal could be leaking. As for the coolant/water, you may have a leak.

Losing that much coolant is not normal. I don't know what parts prices are like there in Sweden, but here to replace everything in the cooling system, it's around $250-300 US. So it's relatively inexpensive to do a complete cooling system overhaul. I would replace the water pump, thermostat, radiator, hoses, cap, and fan clutch with new. Also, are you using antifreeze/coolant? Straight water is not good. Proper coolant not only prevents freezing, but raises the boiling point of the coolant/water mixture, and ensures your cooling system operates normally.

While hopefully your problem is something cheap and simple there is a quite high chance its head problems.
Heads are a known weak spot on the VM engines if the cooling system hasn`t been looked after meticulously.
I bought a 2001 td with known head problems . I had it sorted at a VM engine specialist and it was quite a costly job .
4 heads and they are plated so you are not supposed to skim them . I did have them skimmed to save costs and took a chance . ran fine for 10,000 and then I sold it . Cost from memory was about £1000
My brother bought a 2.5 td a couple of years ago . not long after it started to use water but couldn`t find a leak . Finally the heads just gave up so he had them skimmed , new gasket etc . Lasted about a month before it failed again . Off to the scrap yard with that one as it was only a £500 jeep.
What ever it is causing your water loss get on it quickly. If your heads are fine now and you cook it they will soon be dead .
Th VM engine man told me 2.5td`s needed a coolant swap every service. Any issues with you cooling system will kill your head (fan , radiator , bad coolant etc)
He said the engines are very reliable if they are cared for but heads always fail if not maintained .
I`m on the hunt for a 4lt now . sod the 2.5 and its frailness , They are so old its hard to know what life they have lead.
