1999 XJ transmission issues in hot weather
I have a 99 XJ sport 4wd with an auto transmission. Approx 175K miles on it. I have notice a significant difference in how the trans ‘downshifts’ when going up a hill in the summer when the weather is warmer. I have never had the bands adjusted (is that a thing on the xj?). The trans fluid looks good. The kick down appears to be adjusted correctly. Any ideas as to what I should look at?

First off, that cable needs to be adjusted. It can't "appear" correctly adjusted.
Video link below on how to do it. takes 2 minutes to do.
Do a drain and fill on the trans using Dex?Merc fluid. buy a gallon and you'll have plenty.

I have done that adjustment before and it didn’t seem to make a difference. I will be doing a tranny service in the near future. It has been 50K of stop and go SoCal traffic since my last fluid and filter change.

So i did the adjustment like the video showed. Haven’t seen much difference. Is ther a way to’flush’ the trans so i can get as much of the old fluid out as possible? I know the trans holds way more fluid than what comes out when you dump it. Maybe do a drain and fill once or twice in a short period of time prior to doing the full service?
