1999 xj po700 & po705
My engine light came on last week and I'm wondering if anyone can help out. I tried to delete with OBD-II but they came right back. Also, My back-up lights are not working. Some searches on here indicate that my nss needs to be cleaned.
I'm hearing stories that they usually break when you attempt to take them off so I'm kind of afraid to do it as I have no other vehicle. Team Cherokee has them for $150 but says the transmission pan needs to be removed? Is that true?
At least one tutorial on the web has no mention of removing the pan. Also, if cleaned will this get rid of the po700 & po705? I'm not a mechanic but think I could tackle this job if not needing to remove the pan. I can handle a wrench and have replaced stuff like radiator, water pump, alternator ect but I'm afraid of anything tranny related. (in more ways than one)

Here is a good link to "refurbishing" the neutral safety switch. What you describe fits exactly with an NSS issue.
You do NOT have to remove the transmission pan! I'd spray it down with a good penetrating oil a day or two before you tackle this job as it is easy to crack them during removal.
