1999 XJ Diesel Oil Change

I am about to do the oil change on my 1999 2.5 Turbo Diesel, i once read you were supposed to do it parked on a gentle slope to drain it properly ... but can't remember which direction ... can anyone advise?

You can do it on a flat surface since the engine sits on a slant towards the oil drain plug.

My drive is on a very gentle slope, so i gotta choose a direction ... i guess from what you saying i am probably better to park it with the nose sligthly higher than the tail .. rather than the other way around

Think a little bit about this. You want to drain the oil from the engine, do you want the drain plug to be at the lowest point, or higher than the lowest point? It's not rocket surgery.
