Default 1998 Jeep Cherokee Classic Fuel Pump

Hi,

I have a 1998 Jeep Cherokee CLASSIC
1998 Jeep Cherokee 4WD 4.0L MFI 6cyl S in the VIN

I need to replace the fuel pump assembly. The sending unit is shot.
I ordered a Spectra Premium SP7121M Fuel Pump Module
by Spectra Premium because the website said this was the right one for my vehicle.

I them learned that my pump has three connections a wired plug, output, and return.

This pump I ordered only has the wired plug and one output, NO return.

However, everywhere I go I keep finding the same kind of pump with only a plug and output.

I’m confused. Will the return have a metal stem or something that hose will attach to???

If so what vital bit of info am I missing in order to find the right pump.

One picture I saw showed that the pump is short in length and kind of fat. I have not seen a decent picture of the top of the pump to really know what I’m looking for.

Any help would be wonderful.

Brad

That looks just like the fuel pump I installed on my 98 sport on Sunday. There is a plastic line heading back to the fuel tank, but it connects to something else, not the fuel pump. The fuel pump only has the wiring harness and a single metal fuel line connected to it.

Default 1998 Jeep Cherokee Classic Fuel Pump

Thanks!!!

I did not realize that the return did not go to the pump. I had only crawled under the jeep and looked around to see what I could see. With that tank still up and attached I figured that return was going to the pump.

So I guess I'll order another one. Too bad I sent the other one back yesterday!!!!

Thanks again!!!

No problem. Changing out the fuel pump isn't too hard of a job, dropping the tank being the biggest obstacle. My heep runs a lot better with the new pump though, and starts up on the first try every time now.

i have a 1998 classic just like this guy. some say the fuel pump is near the middle mounted on the frame, and some in the gas tank. from the sound of this it sounds like it's in the gas tank, is that how yours is?
