Default 1998 jeep 4wd problem

When I shift the lever from 2WD to 4WD HIGH, the vehicle will immediately slow down, like putting/slamming on the brakes. It will quickly come to a complete stop. When I try to accelerate from a dead stop, the motor rev's but the vehicle hardly moves! Any ideas?

Check the ring and pinion rations in the front and rear axles and compare them. You may have an axle, probably rear, that has been replaced with the wrong ratio.
