I have 1 98 Cherokee classic with a 4.0 and automatic. that the previous owner severely overheated. I have located a wreck 99 Cherokee sport with a 4.0 that still runs good and is fairly low miles. I was told by the salvage yard that this engine wouldn't work as it was exclusive to the 99 only. I've read thru several posts and it appears that this engine might work. If anyone knows for sure if this swap will work I'd love to hear the details. I don't mind changing parts as I will be buying the complete wrecked Cherokee. but I don't want to spend that money if it's not gonna work in my 98

Plug-n-play, you can easily part out what you don't use and recoup some $$

thats sounds good but why on earth would the crash books say it only works on 99 models

No clue, maybe because that was the year the intake changed. As long as it comes from a XJ, it'll work
