1998 cherokee auto dipstick
Have 1998 Jeep Cherokee. Question checking auto fluid level. Dipstick has a small hole between add and max mark. Drive to normal operating temp of motor. Level at operating temp is at the small hole, farther up is the max level about a 1/2 an inch. Is the full mark at the hole or is it at the max level. What is the hole for in the dipstick.

I presume you are checking the fluid level with XJ on a level surfacem, with the engine running and the tranny warmed up.
The max mark is the full mark. Do not go over the full mark when topping up the fluid.

It should be at the dot or above, but not above Max. The Max mark is just that, the maximum fluid the trans should have in it. There is such a thing as too much fluid.
