Default 1997 xj torque converter

So I've been having transmission issues for a while now. From what I've read it could possibly be the torque converter. My tranny is over heating and the fluid is very discolored like milky brown. It also slips quite a bit. My jeep has a two inch lift on 31 tall tires. My question is what stall torque converter would be best for my application which is daily driving, highway driving? I will be installing a transmission cooler by hayden in the coming week here. Thanks

I can't give you any input on what converter you'd want, but the first thing I would do if I were you is drop the pan, change the fluid and filters and see what happens.
Many times that has a positive impact. The fairly low cost and amount of time it would take to do that is worth trying in my opinion.
My friends Silverado had his transmission slipping and going nuts and we thought for sure it was toast. But after changing the fluid/filters it's good again. And that was like 5 years ago!
If it still doesn't work right, then proceed with the bigger stuff.

Ever drained the trans and refilled it with good old Dex/Merc fluid?

Ever adjusted the throttle valve cable? Check this thread out. https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f2/tra...-going-221548/

I wouldn't add a cooler until you can keep your fluid from getting burnt and milky, just another things to flush out. A TC could cause burnt fluid, recently had to take a car in for warranty work because the trans was slipping bad, TSB for torque converter.

I have changed the fluid three times now due to the cooler lines blowing up twice. I had the shop repair the connectors going into the tranny and two weeks later it blew up again so i have now put two new connections on and refilled it with dex 3. Thanks for your're help with the tv cable cruiser54 I'll put the cooler on when it shows up and continue to drive with hopefully no slipping and staying cooler.

What do you mean, "to the cooler lines blowing up twice"? How does a cooler line blow up? There is very little pressure in there unless something is radically wrong.

I have changed the fluids again and i'm also adding a cooler and I've adjusted the TV cable so maybe that'll solve the problem.

Sorry i should have mentioned it was the connector going into the transmission. I pulled over on the side of the road and it was puking like crazy. They have been replaced now and so far no leaks.

Milky colored trans fluid would make me suspect the cooler inside the radiator. If that's leaking coolant into the trans oil, you'll get lots of slipping and overheating.

I've thought of that as well because it had overheating issues when i first got it and the coolant was also a brown color. But if it was a radiator issue would the coolant not be changing color as well because the trans fluid would eventually make its way into the radiator?

Depends on the size of the leak. The radiator is under pressure, whereas the oil cooler have very little pressure on it. The return line drains into the tranmission pan.

Well there's a good chance it has a leak because of how badly this jeep was neglected. I found a mishimoto radiator for 160 bucks so I could try that. My upper and lower radiator hoses need to be changed anyways.
