Default 1997 xj sport w/OBDI ??

I am confused. Everything I have read online says that my 97 xj sport 4.0 should be OBDII but when I do the old key on-key off method, the digital odometer shows 12, 27, 55 which are OBDI codes right? I am not bad at web searches and spent some time on this but I finally caved and had to ask. Thank you!

Yes, but why am i getting OBDI readings? With OBDII, I thought that when doing the key-on, key-off method, the digital odometer would be giving codes that read P####. Instead I am getting 12,27,55 which are OBDI....right?

The key trick works with obdII as well, if that's what you're asking. Looks like your code is a 27. If you want the P codes you have to connect a scan tool to the port and read them that way. Same code different numbers. You can cross reference them ...somewhere...try google. Or break down and drop $20 on ebay for a decent scanner with graphing.

Yes.That is one part of what I did not know but if it is OBDII then why am I getting a OBDI code (27) ? I thought OBDII codes were P####...So are you saying, when using the key trick on OBDII you will get OBDI codes only?

Not sure if they are called obd1 codes being on an obd2 vehicle, but ..right...I think you have the idea. However make sure when you look up code 27 you are searching on your vehicle year and make.

The 97 XJ is OBD2, but for whatever reason Chrysler didnt program the dash to display them as P codes. The factory diagnostic manuals for 97 list them as they show up on the dash, AND as P codes, as well as a "hex code" that is used by the DRB scanners used at the dealership But yes, 97 is OBD2. The dash simply doesnt display them as a P code.

The FSM for my 97 has three hex codes listed under 27. I wont bother with what those hex code #s are as some will confuse it with the dash code and thier head will explode. But, those three codes correspond to P codes P0203 (inj. #3 control circuit), P0202 (inj. #2 control circuit), and P0201 (inj. #1 control circuit). Whats in parenthesis are what the DRB displays, which is followed by, in the FSM, "Injector #x output driver does not respond properly to the control signal." This is all listed under trouble code 27.
