Question 1997 2.5 TD sport..High fuel consumption

Hi All.

I have recently been viewing threads and found most are getting 30+ MPG on their 2.5 TD's!!..Mine runs very well, is a 97, 88K miles but the very best I can get is 22 MPG..thats doing 60-65 on the motorway and keeping the Revs no higher than 2500...Your thoughts on this rather disturbing find are most welcomed...

BTW..Tyre pressures fine, no additional weight or roof boxes fitted..before anyone asks..

Mark

How old is the diesel filter? When was the last time you had the injectors looked at or cleaned? How is the air cleaner? Also what kind of fuel are you using? I know that over here we have a couple different blends of #2 diesel. Also it may just be your jeep. I have a 4.0L 00 with a 5spd and get worse milage then a friends stock 01 auto tranny and his is lifted higher then mine. Hope this helps.

Glow plugs would have absolutely nothing to do with mileage.

glow plug heat the fuel so it produces power if there bad as in not working proprley it will take more fuel to move the vechicle hence bad mileage

Depends on the Diesel engine if the glow plugs are needed for continued operation. On the newer engines that have them they are only on for the initial start up, after that they shut down and the engine uses them to ignite the mix with out them being on. However, if I remember right the 2.5/2.8 VM Motori CRD engine does not use them. It uses a heated air element in the intake to help with cold weather starts.

On the XJ diesel the glow plugs will stay on for a maximum of 200 seconds after ignition, based on coolant temperature.
