Default 1996 xj hinge pin replacement

I have read all the threads regarding hinge pin replacement.

My question is to anyone who has actually replaced the front door hinge pin.

I ordered the two Doorman hinge pins # 38439 for my 16 year old's sons new/used 96 XJ. Doorman calls these out as the 97-2001 replacement. They do not have one specific for the 84-96.

Did anyone use these specific parts?

I found another pin replacement @ www.jeep4x4center.com ,Part # 4638276.
($30.00 per!)

Their different in configuration.

I would normally do this job myself, but weather and urgency have my local mechanic doing it this week.

So, can you use the Doorman part #, or is the one from the above link the way to go.

I know there is much written on this subject, just looking for someone who has done it with one of the two options.

Thanks!

Mike

I haven't done this YET. But the reason is that it is a PITA. The 96 XJ is NOT the same as the 97. on the 96 the hinge is one piece. part welded to the car frame, part bolted onto the door (with Torx 40 bolts). the pin between the two parts appears to be part of, or welded to the door-side of the hinge.

I spent labor day weekend trying to get the "pin" out. It's been heated, beat on, beat on some more, soaked in PB Blaster, WD-40, etc... and won't go anywhere.

The shape of the door prevents me from getting a drill straight onto it to drill it out entirely, although i did use a grinder and remove the "mushroomed" ends of the pin where it was attached to the hinge body.

Next weekend i'll be at it again, will remove the door entirely (I stripped one of the T40's so i didn't get the door off last weekend) so i can drill out the pin. I will try to remember to do a write up for the forum. But mostly just wanted to write in here that the 97 is not the same as the 96.

The pin is splined at the top and pressed in, then held in place with 20ish years of rust. Big ****ing hammer, torch, and a.... god dammit I spaced on what they're called. Solid metal rod thing you use to direct a blow onto a specific spot. Heat the whole hing up and hammer the heck outta it.

@OP, why are you replacing the pins? From what I can collect (Do not take my word on this) the pins are the same.
