Default 1996 xj 4.0 engine interchange??

Hi Im new here and I just bought a 1996 Cherokee sport 4dr with a bad 4.0 engine! I was wondering what years and possibly if a grand Cherokee 4.0 would work? I have been looking it seems only Cherokee and wrangler will work why would a grand Cherokee be different? I would appreciate any info!

Thanks

Anything XJ 91 to 99 will work fine. There are even more than that. The chart below covers the Wranglers etc.

XJ Cherokee and ZJ Grand Cherokee 4.0L engine blocks interchange.

2000+ TJ Wrangler and WJ Grand Cherokee 4.0L engine blocks interchange.

XJ/ZJ blocks and 2000+ TJ/WJ blocks do not interchange without significant modifications. (1991 to 1995 YJ and 1997-1999 4.0L TJ Wrangler blocks will interchange in XJ/ZJ and visa-versa).

TJ/WJ 4.0L Engine blocks underwent clean sheet design changes effective in the 1999 WJ Grand and 2000 TJ Wrangler. These blocks are not interchangeable with XJ/ZJ engine blocks. The reason is motor mount bolt holes and belt driven accessory mounting bolt holes are in different locations, or not present at all, TJ/WJ vs. XJ/ZJ.

XJ: "Regular" (not Grand) Cherokees 84-01
ZJ: Grand Cherokee 93-98 (Gen1)
WJ: Grand Cherokee 99-04 (Gen2)
YJ: Wrangler 87-95 (Gen1)
TJ: Wrangler 97-06 (Gen2)

I just replaced my 96 engine with a 98. There are a few differences that you should note. First, the engine coolant switch/sensor at the back of the valve cover may not be there on your donor engine. I tapped the thermostat housing and put the sensor there and ran the wiring.

Second, the 98's sensors also used different wiring connectors so I just swapped in the original sensors since the JY cut off the wiring harness.

Hi thanks for this information. I just want to be clear so I dont make a mistake. A 1998 wrangler 4.0 block will fit a 2000 jeep cherokee 4.0? I just want the block and will not be reusing the cylinder head. Using all the parts from my current xj block and swapping over will everything work? I know the camshaft sensor will be in place of the distributor and there will be no coil brackets. Will the engine mounts and accessory bolt holes switch over?

I am changing due to notorious cylinder head cracking and taking its toll on the lower end. Motor has developed large knock after 252k miles. all original so no complaints.

thanks for your help.

I have a 1999 jeep wrangler 4.0. I found a low mileage 4.0 out if a 1996 Cherokee. I've noticed a lot of the sensor plugs are different. My question is, will the injectors swap over to the 1996 motor?
