Well, now that you mention it.......... Does your cruise control bar have the little LED on it to show it is in the 'ON" mode? Now that I have the wiring correct, it still is not working! As I mentioned in my first post, I found out that there are different Cruise switch bars (See attached), and although the seller sold the one I have as a 1996, It is an actual 1995 by the chart. I already have the 1996 part number Cruise bar en-route to me just in case the info that they were "the same" was incorrect. My guess is that your's has the LED, as the one I currently have does not.
And thanks to "Radi's" link, the ohms on mine do not check out, and neither do the volt's in the second attachment below.
Received the ordered cruise control steering wheel bar trim today, to replace the original one purchased. Thanks to the constructive help of members 'Radi' for the testing link, and 'SteveMongr' who actually took off his steering column trim to supply a photo of the wiring at the clockspring connector, my install of the OEM cruise control system is now installed and WORKING!
Hello everyone, new member here with as first time Cherokee (or Jeep) owner.
Picked up a 1996 Cherokee XJ 4dr 4WD with only 106 grand on the ticker, and having had a whole bunch of maintenance done to it. After working out a few bugs, I have been attempting to install stock OEM cruise control to it, but am running into a brick wall. Hoping to get someone that has a 1996 "Cherokee" with working stock cruise control to help me out.
So, I Hit the local auto recycle yard and operated on (I believe) a 1990 Grand Cherokee. Parts obtained were the Servo, servo bracket, cable vacuum tank and lines, and the turn signal multi switch with cruise, and wiring with it's connector.
All the engine mounted stuff went right in, easy peasy, after I tested the servo out for functionality. Could hear the servos open and close as voltage was applied.
Here is where it turned on me. The 1996 steering column changed, and the cruise control switch is mounted to the bottom center of the steering wheel. So the multi switch will not work. AFTER 1996, they changed the cruise switch again to two buttons where the horn buttons are in the 1996.
Went onto eBay and picked up a used clockspring for the 1996, and also a used cruise switch which said it was for a 1996. Later, I think I found that the switch part number is actually from a 1995, but I also read that it should work.
I continuity checked, and (using a 9-volt battery) checked the voltage through the clockspring and the cruise switch. Everything checked out. The steering column wire plug, plugged right into the clockspring, and the clockspring pigtail plugged right into the switch, and the switch mounted correctly as well as the horn circuit. BUT IT DOESN'T WORK!
And worse, weird things happen when pushing the buttons.
The buttons on my cruise control bar read left to right: On/Off - SPEED CONTROL on a big solid bar - Resume/Decel - Set/accel
I think the steering column wiring in the connector at the clockspring has been switched around. I have since tried nearly every conceivable combination, but NADA works.
PLEASE, SOMEONE WITH THE 1996 CHEROKEE with cruise control, take off your lower steering column cover and either photograph or diagram the wires and order that they are in the clockspring connector. I think this is where my problem is. I have struck out even at the local Jeep dealer on finding a wiring diagram for that plug, so this is my last hope I think.

So I am having the same issue. I installed the proper cruise control solenoid. All wiring hooked up correctly. But I think I have the wrong cruise control switch panel. Part number on my cruise control switch is 56007066 0555. It does not have the indicator light on it. Hoping I just need to buy the correct switch panel.
I also have an extra wire on my clock spring that is not hooked up to anything. I pulled this one from a junk yard. No clue what year. Any ideas? My Jeep is also a 1996 Cherokee. See pictures... no clue what this wire is for.
You have the same issue I had with someone on eBay selling a cruise control switch bar saying it is for a 1996, when in fact it is for a 1995. And by that part number you quote, that is what you have! The 1995 switch bar. Just our luck, Jeep changed some things between the 1995, and the early 1996. Then halfway through 1996, completely changed the steering wheel arrangement. Go figure....
You need to find the Cruise Control bar switch, part number 5600-7712. This switch will have the green LED 'ON' light.
See the previous comments and photographs for the proper wiring connections between the switch and plug from the clockspring, and the clockspring to the steering column wire harness.
If the clockspring you installed has all the same color coded wires in the same positions, you're golden! IF not, you need to get a different clockspring. The proper one is part number 5600-7621.
Not sure on the extra wire harness from the clockspring you have, but my guess is that clockspring is from a newer model, and the wire harness is for a newer generation steering wheel air-bag. In case no one has warned you, be gentle with the airbag on your jeeps steering wheel! As there are no remote sensors, it can be set off by banging the thing wrong in assembly.

I purchased a 1996 XJ at government auction a few weeks ago with only 107k miles. I have changed most the fluids, put a lift and tires/wheels on, and am steadily get all her maintenance caught up. The one thing I really would like to add is cruise control. I've ordered all the parts except the clock spring. Is it possible that my existing clock spring will work? I have the servo, panel switch (now I need to check for green light), and had ordered a clock spring off ebay but for whatever reason the seller canceled...
So find another clock spring or is there a chance my 96 has one that could work even though it came from the factory without cruise?
