Wagon58.
I drive a stock '96. 150,000 miles on the ticker. Honestly, it's pretty reliable and I don't carry any tools other than the bare basics.

Here's what I have had to replace since I bought it new.

Radiator at about 120,000 miles. I put in a cheap ChiCom three row radiator about 5 years ago, no problems so far.

A couple water pumps. I've had troubles with rebuilt pumps. Lesson learned, buy the factory water pump.

The exhaust system rusted out at about the same time all the exhaust system hangers did at 140,000 miles.

1 hvac fan speed resistor at about 100k

Replaced the alternator around 140,000.

Just last month, the engine started misfiring (random misfire). Replaced the Crank Position Sensor, runs fine now.

Underside rust is beginning to take it's toll... not sure what I'm going to do about that yet.

I intend to keep it on the road, they don't build anything like it anymore so it's worth much more to me than I can sell it for.

Good luck, enjoy your jeep. You are driving a piece of history.

thanks! all good advice

I just bought this Limited last week on a impulse. I have been looking and found this one - 86,000 one owner with the V8. I'm taking it out on the road next week, hopefully will not have issues.

does it have many metric nut/bolts?

I keep every tool I own (which ain't much).

A little "mechanics tool set"
Hammer
Jack
Half inch drive breaker bar
Half inch drive sockets
Jumper cables
PBlaster
2 quarts of oil

It ain't much, but I lifted my jeep with nothing more then those hand tools (beside the obvious floor jack and stands)

I too would really like to know if the majority of the bolts on the XJ and WJ are metric. or standered?

If it's like most mid 90's Big 3 vehicles it's a freakin crapshoot if a fastener is SAE or Metric. Get a decent set of both 3/8 and 1/4 drive SAE and Metrics and that will cover 90% of what you'll encounter on the road.

Other basics:
Screwdrivers
Hammer
Adjustable Wrench
Combo Wrenches
Pliers (regular and needle nose)
